1. Policy Statement
Swiss International University (SIU) is firmly committed to upholding the principle of academic freedom as a foundational element of its identity as a global institution of higher learning. We affirm the right of all academic staff and researchers—regardless of rank, nationality, or location—to pursue, disseminate, and express knowledge without censorship, political interference, or institutional restriction.
This policy formalizes SIU's commitment to freedom of research, teaching, and scholarly expression in line with international standards, including the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel and Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.
2. Scope of the Policy
This policy applies to:
Full-time and part-time faculty
Junior and senior academic researchers
Visiting lecturers and professors
Postdoctoral scholars
Academic staff involved in curriculum development and public discourse
It applies to all campuses and partner institutions affiliated with SIU.
3. Principles of Academic Freedom
3.1 Freedom of Research
Senior Academics have full freedom to select their fields of inquiry, define research questions, choose methodology, and publish results.
Junior Academics and Early-Career Researchers are entitled to the same freedoms under the mentorship of senior scholars and within the framework of their professional development.
All researchers may pursue both applied and theoretical research without fear of institutional censorship or commercial interference.
SIU guarantees the right to disseminate research findings publicly, even when such findings may be controversial or challenge established views.
3.2 Freedom of Teaching
Senior Faculty Members are entitled to design and deliver course content aligned with their academic expertise, research interests, and pedagogical philosophy.
Junior Faculty Members are equally supported in shaping learning environments that encourage critical thinking, discussion, and open inquiry, subject to curriculum guidelines.
Faculty are free to introduce diverse perspectives and emerging knowledge into classroom teaching, even on sensitive or complex topics.
3.3 Freedom of Expression
All academic staff have the right to speak, publish, and present publicly in their area of academic competence.
Faculty may engage in public debate, academic critique, and policy discussion, provided that they do so respectfully and in accordance with professional standards.
3.4 Protection Against Retaliation
No member of the academic community shall face discrimination, dismissal, demotion, or disciplinary action for exercising academic freedom.
Whistleblowing and research integrity reporting are protected under SIU’s governance framework.
4. Responsibilities and Boundaries
While SIU defends academic freedom, this right is accompanied by corresponding responsibilities:
Academic freedom must be exercised within the bounds of evidence-based scholarship and ethical research practice.
Faculty should respect the rights of students, fellow staff, and the university’s multicultural environment.
Teaching and research must not promote hate, discrimination, or unfounded conspiracy.
Statements made in the name of the university must reflect institutional values, unless clearly presented as personal opinion.
5. Implementation and Oversight
The Academic Council oversees the implementation of this policy and investigates any potential breaches.
Concerns related to violations of academic freedom can be submitted confidentially to the Office of Academic Integrity
SIU’s Annual Academic Freedom Report will track implementation, concerns, and improvements.
6. Alignment with Global Standards
This policy is consistent with:
The UNESCO Recommendation (1997) on academic freedom
The Magna Charta Universitatum
The European Charter for Researchers
Best practices from leading international universities
7. Public Access and Communication
This policy shall be published on the official SIU website, included in staff and student handbooks, and integrated into:
