At Swiss International University (SIU), we recognize that operating within the arid climate of the United Arab Emirates requires an uncompromising commitment to water conservation. Aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, SIU has fully integrated advanced wastewater treatment processes across our campus operations. Long before the 2024 compliance deadlines, SIU established strict, active processes to ensure that wastewater generated on our premises is rigorously treated, managed, and repurposed wherever possible.
Our Wastewater Treatment Framework
SIU’s wastewater management strategy relies on a dual approach combining localized on-site greywater treatment with strict municipal processing partnerships. Greywater—which includes lightly used water from campus washbasins, staff breakrooms, and cooling system condensates—is collected through a dedicated dual-plumbing network. This water undergoes localized mechanical filtration and biological treatment processes on-site to safely remove impurities and pathogens.
Once treated to regulatory safety standards, this reclaimed water is redirected into our campus infrastructure to serve non-potable operational needs. By using treated wastewater for the flushing of toilets and the irrigation of campus landscaping, SIU drastically reduces its reliance on energy-intensive desalinated municipal water.
Strict Municipal Integration for Blackwater
For blackwater (sewage) and highly concentrated wastewater, SIU has established binding operational protocols with certified municipal wastewater treatment authorities in Dubai and Switzerland. Our campus infrastructure is engineered to ensure that 100% of untreated blackwater is securely channeled into centralized treatment grids, where it undergoes tertiary treatment at municipal facilities.
Monitoring and Quality Assurance
The SIU Campus Operations and Quality Assurance Committee conducts quarterly audits of our wastewater treatment infrastructure to guarantee operational efficiency. These audits track the volume of greywater successfully treated and recycled back into our systems, ensuring we meet our ambitious year-on-year water reduction targets.
By taking direct responsibility for the wastewater we generate, Swiss International University is actively "closing the loop." We are demonstrating to our management students—and to the global higher education community—that ecological accountability and operational efficiency are fundamentally intertwined.
