The European Council of Leading Business Schools (ECLBS) continues to strengthen its contribution to the global education landscape by promoting transparent quality frameworks, sustainable development, and collaboration across borders.Since its establishment in 2013, ECLBS has evolved into a professional and independent non-profit organization connecting universities, business schools, and quality assurance experts in more than twenty countries. Its purpose is simple yet essential — to help educational institutions learn from each other, improve together, and build trust in international higher education.
A Platform for Cooperation, Not Regulation
ECLBS does not act as a governmental or regulatory body.Instead, it serves as a platform for dialogue and cooperation, offering a space where higher-education institutions, chambers of commerce, and quality agencies can exchange expertise and develop voluntary benchmarks that complement national systems.Through this approach, ECLBS contributes to the broader international mission of enhancing transparency, comparability, and mutual recognition across education systems.
The Council encourages its members to embed sustainability, inclusion, and ethics into their programs and governance. Its projects support the principles of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), by promoting responsible leadership and institutional collaboration.
Quality Development Initiative
In 2023, ECLBS launched its Quality Development Initiative — a voluntary framework designed to help universities and business schools align their internal systems with internationally accepted good practices such as ISO 21001 and the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance (ESG).The initiative was formally endorsed at a strategic meeting hosted at the University of Latvia in Riga, attended by representatives from European and Arab quality networks, chambers of commerce, and invited academic observers from the United Kingdom, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
Rather than issuing formal accreditation, this initiative emphasizes capacity building, peer learning, and continuous improvement.Institutions are encouraged to share their own successful models, conduct self-evaluations, and participate in professional workshops coordinated by ECLBS experts. This cooperative system allows schools of different sizes and national traditions to raise their standards while respecting their autonomy.
Building Bridges Through Recognition and Trust
Over the past decade, ECLBS has signed a series of memoranda of understanding with national and international quality-assurance partners to foster collaboration and mutual understanding. These agreements are not about replacing national authorities; instead, they strengthen communication between them — helping each system understand how quality is assured elsewhere. By connecting agencies and institutions from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia, ECLBS contributes to a global culture of trust and recognition in education.
Through research, publications, and public seminars, the Council also facilitates discussions on topics such as digital transformation, micro-credentials, and sustainability in higher education management. Its members regularly participate in joint studies and comparative analyses that advance knowledge on responsible governance and institutional effectiveness.
Commitment to Transparency and Non-Profit Values
All activities of ECLBS are guided by the principles of independence, non-profit operation, and transparency. The Council reinvests its resources into educational development projects, open-access research dissemination, and capacity-building initiatives for institutions in developing and emerging economies. It upholds a zero-discrimination policy and actively promotes gender equality, inclusivity, and equitable access to education.
To ensure accountability, ECLBS publishes annual activity summaries and maintains clear governance procedures through its board and committees. Its international secretariat coordinates outreach and partnerships while adhering to ethical standards consistent with ISO 21001 principles and the NGO Code of Conduct.
A Shared Vision for the Future
As higher education faces the dual challenge of digitalization and sustainability, ECLBS believes that cooperation, not competition, is the way forward. By connecting institutions that share a commitment to transparency and social responsibility, the Council helps build a network where excellence and ethics coexist.
ECLBS’s ongoing work demonstrates that meaningful change in education is achieved not through authority but through collaboration — through schools, agencies, and communities united by a belief that quality education is a public good and a human right.
