A University-Wide Commitment to SDG Education

SIU integrates sustainability education across its entire academic portfolio, ensuring institutional coherence with our long-term strategic vision for 2025 and beyond. From undergraduate foundation programs to doctoral research, every enrolled student engages with the core principles of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Whether mastering business administration, technology, law, or public health, our students are challenged to critically evaluate the global impact of their industries and champion long-term social and environmental responsibility.

Integrated and Dedicated Learning Opportunities

We ensure sustainability is never treated as an isolated, standalone topic. Instead, it is structurally embedded throughout the SIU curriculum via three targeted tiers:

Mandatory Core Themes: Foundational sustainability principles are integrated into core modules across multiple disciplines, ensuring all graduates possess baseline environmental and civic literacy.
Targeted Electives: Optional courses allow students to explore specialized SDG topics in greater depth, offering pathways in sustainable finance, green entrepreneurship, and ethical corporate governance.
Dedicated Degree Programs: For students seeking to make sustainability their primary career focus, SIU offers specialized full-degree programs in sustainable development, climate policy, and social innovation.

Master's in Sustainability (EQF Level 7, 120 ECTS)

A cornerstone of our 2025 academic offering is the Master's in Sustainability. This comprehensive postgraduate program is designed explicitly to prepare students for executive leadership roles in addressing global sustainability crises. Fully aligned with European Qualifications Framework (EQF) Level 7 standards, the program carries 120 ECTS credits and seamlessly bridges rigorous academic theory with practical, real-world application.

Extending Education Beyond the Classroom

Achieving the SDGs requires educating the broader public, not just enrolled degree-seekers. In 2025, SIU aggressively expanded its civic educational outreach initiatives:

Alumni Network: We expanded the Sustainability in Business Leadership Webinar Series, providing alumni with free, continuous executive education on renewable energy finance, green entrepreneurship, and ESG compliance. In 2025 alone, over 250 alumni participated in specialized workshops led by global sustainability experts.
Local Communities: SIU faculty and students partnered with local municipalities to host the Green Cities Workshop on sustainable urban planning, alongside an Environmental Awareness Lecture Series streamed globally for free public access. Collaborative community projects—including a Plastic-Free Campus Campaign and Community Solar Energy Training—engaged local residents in hands-on environmental solutions.
Displaced People and Refugees: Through the Education Without Borders Scholarship Program, SIU has provided more than 85 full scholarships for displaced students since 2022. This initiative enables vulnerable populations to access online degree courses in sustainability management and climate change policy. Furthermore, our Digital Literacy for All program equips refugees with foundational IT and environmental education skills, driving integration and global employment opportunities.

Fostering and Measuring Sustainability Literacy

We understand that delivering sustainability education is not enough; we must rigorously measure its efficacy. Throughout 2025, SIU implemented an institutional system to formally assess Sustainability Literacy across the student body.

While the 2025 baseline literacy assessment is utilized primarily for internal curriculum development rather than formal student grading, it represents a critical step in our overarching strategy to continuously enhance the quality, accountability, and global relevance of SIU’s educational impact.
