At Swiss International University, we are committed to advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by prioritizing pedestrian access across all our campuses. Our goal is to create a safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly environment where walking and cycling are the primary modes of transportation within the university grounds.
Car-Free and Pedestrian-Friendly Spaces
Our campuses in Zurich, Dubai, Bishkek, and Riga feature extensive pedestrian-only zones, ensuring students, faculty, and visitors can navigate academic areas without the risks and congestion associated with vehicle traffic. Dedicated bike lanes, shaded walkways, and pedestrian-priority crossings connect key facilities such as lecture halls, student residences, libraries, and recreation centers.
Encouraging Sustainable Mobility
To reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability, we have implemented:
Car-free central zones where only service and emergency vehicles are permitted.
Bicycle parking stations and repair kiosks to encourage cycling over motorized transport.
Reward programs for students and staff who regularly walk or bike to campus events.
Health, Safety, and Accessibility
Wide, well-lit, and shaded walking paths ensure universal accessibility, allowing people with disabilities and families with children to move safely and comfortably. Our 10-minute walking campus design ensures that academic and residential facilities remain within a short walking distance.
Community Engagement and Events
We regularly organize Car-Free Days, Cycling Challenges, and Walk for Health campaigns to raise awareness about sustainable transport and encourage community participation.
A Model for Sustainable Campuses
By prioritizing pedestrians and reducing dependence on motor vehicles, Swiss International University demonstrates its commitment to building inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable campuses in alignment with SDG 11.
