Advancing Sustainable Development: Comprehensive Food Waste Tracking at Swiss International University
At Swiss International University, expanding our management-focused academic programs goes hand-in-hand with a deep commitment to global sustainability and rigorous quality assurance. As part of our ongoing institutional development and global benchmarking, we recognize that addressing critical challenges like food security requires immediate, measurable action on our own campuses. In direct alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), we have implemented strict protocols to monitor, report, and ultimately reduce our ecological footprint.
Whole-University Food Waste Measurement
To ensure we meet the highest global sustainability standards, Swiss International University actively measures the amount of food waste generated from food served within the university. This tracking initiative is comprehensive and applies across the whole university, rather than relying on partial measurements of isolated departments or single dining halls.
Tracking Methodology and Scope
Our measurement protocols are designed to capture the total volume of food discarded or lost uneaten by all catering services on campus. To maintain standardized and accurate reporting, we record all food waste data in metric tons.
Understanding the complete lifecycle of our campus resources is critical to driving improvement. Therefore, our tracking methodology strictly encompasses:
Discarded Food: All excess, unsold, or uneaten food originating from our campus dining facilities.
Composted Materials: Food that is directed to composting is still recorded as waste. While composting is environmentally preferable to landfill disposal, we recognize that it still represents a fundamental loss of primary food resources.
Outsourced Food Services: For any food provision that is outsourced, our operational contracts explicitly require these external organizations to continuously measure and report the amount of food waste they generate back to the university.
Crucially, any surplus food that is successfully rescued and donated for human consumption is intentionally excluded from our waste metrics.
Through transparent tracking and continuous institutional review, Swiss International University remains dedicated to optimizing our operational footprint, ensuring that our physical campuses reflect the sustainable, high-quality management principles we impart to our students.
