At Swiss International University (SIU), we recognize that while advanced green infrastructure is essential, true environmental sustainability cannot be achieved through technology alone. It requires a fundamental shift in human behavior. In direct alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SIU has launched a comprehensive, ongoing campaign to actively promote conscious water usage across all our global campuses.
As we reflect on our progress in our April 2026 Sustainability Update, we are proud to share how we are transforming our students, faculty, and staff into active stewards of water conservation. Operating across diverse environments—from Switzerland and Latvia to Kyrgyzstan and the United Arab Emirates—requires us to adapt our messaging, but our core institutional mandate remains the same: every drop counts.
Campus-Wide Awareness Campaigns
To ensure that water conservation remains at the forefront of our community’s mind, SIU actively promotes conscious water usage through continuous, highly visible campus campaigns. Our "Every Drop Counts" initiative is deeply integrated into the daily campus experience.
Across all SIU facilities, high-traffic areas, restrooms, cafeterias, and laboratories feature prominent, multi-lingual behavioral prompts. These visual reminders educate users on the localized impact of water waste and encourage simple but highly effective habits, such as ensuring taps are tightly closed and minimizing water running times during laboratory clean-ups.
Furthermore, SIU utilizes digital signage networks in our administrative buildings and student lounges to display real-time campus water consumption dashboards. By visually representing daily water usage against our conservation targets, we gamify sustainability, encouraging students and faculties to collectively lower their water footprint.
Integrated Education and Onboarding
Promoting conscious water usage begins the moment a new member joins our academic community. SIU has formally integrated water sustainability training into our mandatory student orientation programs and new staff onboarding protocols.
New arrivals are educated on the specific water challenges facing their respective campus regions—such as aquifer depletion in the Middle East or wastewater reduction in Europe. They are also trained on how to use our dedicated "Green Campus" mobile application, which features an instant QR-code reporting tool. This empowers any student or staff member to instantly report dripping faucets, running toilets, or irrigation leaks directly to our global facilities team for immediate resolution.
Student-Led Conservation Initiatives
