Instead, SIU enforces a dynamic, climate-adaptive landscaping policy rooted in water-conscious planting, xeriscaping, and local ecological stewardship.
Climate-Specific Botanical Selection
Across all our global campuses and academic centers, SIU strictly mandates the selection of native, indigenous, and climate-resilient flora. By choosing plants naturally adapted to their specific geographical environments, we eliminate the need for artificial, water-intensive irrigation:
Temperate & European Sites: Grounds feature native perennials, rain-fed botanical gardens, and clover-blend lawns that thrive on natural rainfall without requiring municipal irrigation systems.
Arid & Warm Regional Hubs: Landscaping relies exclusively on xeriscaping principles. Sites utilize drought-tolerant species, desert succulents, and native trees that require minimal hydration.
Urban & Branch Campuses: Facilities integrate vertical green walls and potted native flora irrigated entirely through closed-loop rainwater harvesting.
Intelligent and Targeted Irrigation Networks
Where supplemental irrigation is required, SIU prohibits overhead sprinklers, which suffer from high evaporation losses. Instead, our facilities deploy smart, subsurface drip-irrigation networks that deliver water directly to plant root systems.
