Institutional Accreditation, Global Rankings, and Degree Equivalency: A Comprehensive Guide

Understanding the Nuances to Secure Your Academic and Professional Future

The landscape of higher education is evolving rapidly, with blended and borderless education models becoming increasingly prominent. Amidst this evolution, some students experience confusion regarding terms such as "International Accreditation," "Attestation," and "Government Scholarship Lists."

At Swiss International University, we believe transparency is the foundation of a strong relationship with our students. Therefore, we have prepared this comprehensive guide to clarify the university's academic and legal standing, and to highlight the fundamental differences between local scholarship regulations and international degree recognition.

1. Do Not Confuse "Recommended Universities" with "Recognized Universities"

A common misconception occurs when students search for a university in "Recommended University Lists" (such as the Safeer program) and mistakenly believe this is the definitive list of recognized institutions. This is entirely inaccurate; the distinction is fundamental:

  • Recommended Universities (For Government Scholarships): These are specific lists approved by Ministries of Education solely for the purpose of government scholarships and funding. (Programs like "Safeer"—meaning Ambassador/Traveler—are named as such because they are designed for physical travel and on-campus study abroad). This pathway strictly requires physical attendance in the university's home country and does not accept distance or online learning. Since our university offers flexible distance learning programs and students pay their tuition directly without government funding, we naturally fall outside the scope of these scholarship-specific lists.

  • Recognized Universities (International Accreditation): These are universities officially licensed and accredited by the Ministries of Education in their home countries. Their degrees are accepted following academic credential evaluation, and they are absolutely not required to be on a "recommended" scholarship list to be recognized internationally.

2. By the Numbers: What Do Scholarship Lists Really Tell Us?

To prove that "recommended" lists do not reflect the actual landscape of global higher education, one only needs to look at the data. Official scholarship lists often cover only about 80 countries worldwide. Furthermore, nearly a quarter of those listed countries do not even have a single university approved for scholarships!

According to these lists, you will not find a single recommended university in major countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, among 120 others. This also applies to nations with rich educational histories like Algeria, Libya, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, as well as European countries like Scotland, Iceland, Croatia, Latvia, Estonia, Armenia, and Serbia. Furthermore, almost the entire continent of Africa is absent.

Even in listed countries, it is common to find only one approved university (as is the case for Belarus, Chad, Malta, and Luxembourg)—as if these nations only possess a single educational institution worthy of inclusion! Meanwhile, there are over 200 internationally recognized countries, meaning that over 70% of the world is completely unrepresented in these scholarship lists.

3. Legal Accreditation and UNESCO Conventions

Swiss International University is an officially licensed and accredited educational institution by the Ministry of Education and Science in our legal country of origin. In accordance with United Nations and UNESCO conventions on the mutual recognition of higher education qualifications (such as the Seoul Convention and the Lisbon Recognition Convention), degrees issued by officially accredited higher education institutions in their home countries are internationally recognized. They must be evaluated objectively and neutrally by other nations based on the academic program itself, and equivalency committees cannot reject them simply because the institution is not on a "recommended for scholarship" list. (Learn more about our accreditations: https://www.swissuniversity.com/en/accreditation)

4. The Diplomatic Attestation Process

Because our degrees are issued by an officially accredited educational institution, all graduation documents receive the necessary official authentications, which include:

  1. Attestation by the Ministry of Education and local official authorities in the home country.

  2. Legalization by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  3. Attestation by Cultural Attachés or Embassies (subject to specialization and standard procedures).

Important Note: Per Ministry of Foreign Affairs regulations, we cannot send copies of official attestations and documents via email. However, we warmly welcome our students and prospective candidates to visit our branches in the United Arab Emirates to view the physical copies of our accreditations and attestations in person.

5. A Unique Edge: Global Rankings & 3 Degrees in 1 Diploma

The university is proud to host over 400 students annually from the Arab Gulf region who trust the quality of our academic outcomes, which are reflected in prestigious global rankings:

  • Ranked among the Top 22 programs globally in the QS Executive Education Rankings (specifically for our MBA program).

  • Ranked among the Top 200 universities globally in the Times Higher Education (THE - SDG 16) Impact Rankings.

Moreover, the university offers graduates the exceptional opportunity to earn degrees from three different countries upon graduation (a certificate from Switzerland, a certificate from Kyrgyzstan, and a diploma from Dubai), granting students maximum flexibility in attesting and utilizing their degrees locally and internationally. (Learn more: https://www.swissuniversity.com/en/3-countries-1-diploma)

6. Scholarships and Degree Equivalency (A Message of Transparency)

Regarding scholarships, our funding system is restricted to students within Switzerland, where we allocate annual grants for 200 Swiss students valued at 5,000 CHF each. Therefore, we are not subject to the conditions of government scholarship programs in the Arab world.

As for local "Equivalency" procedures (specifically for government employment in a student's home country), this remains a sovereign matter governed by the credential evaluation committees in each state, based primarily on the mode of study (on-campus vs. distance learning). We are incredibly proud of our alumni who have successfully leveraged our degrees across various professional and academic paths, and we always encourage our students to clearly verify their employers' specific requirements before embarking on their journey toward excellence with us.
