We have begun tracking how members of our university community commute—by walking, cycling, public transport, shared rides, or private vehicles. This data helps us set clear targets to reduce environmental impact. Our main goal: Ensure that 70% of daily commutes are via sustainable transport methods by the end of 2026.
Key Actions Already in Place
🚲 E-Scooters for Student Use
We offer free electric scooters to students in need, especially those commuting short distances or with mobility concerns. These are available at key campuses and help reduce reliance on cars for nearby travel.
🚌 Public Transport Partnerships
Our university supports access to public transportation by offering discounted or subsidized travel passes in cities like Zurich, Bishkek, and Dubai—encouraging students and staff to use metro, bus, or rail systems.
🚶♂️ Infrastructure for Active Travel
We’ve added secure bike storage, showers, and walking routes on campus to support those who prefer to cycle or walk. Signage and safety measures are continuously improved to make active commuting practical and safe.
🚗 Shared Transport Solutions
Carpooling platforms, university shuttle services, and priority parking for electric vehicles are part of our effort to promote shared and cleaner modes of transport. These services are coordinated to match class schedules and local transport hubs.
📱 Digital Support Tools
We are piloting a student-designed carpool app that helps match riders based on location and class times, promoting convenient and sustainable ride-sharing.
Looking Ahead
Our sustainability team conducts quarterly reviews of progress and student feedback. Additional actions planned include:
Expanding the e-scooter fleet
Hosting semester campaigns on sustainable commuting
Recognizing students who demonstrate leadership in green transport choices
At Swiss International University, we view sustainable commuting as part of our responsibility to build inclusive, resilient, and environmentally conscious campuses. Together, we are shaping a smarter way to move—today and into the future.
