Diverting groundwater or river water through built infrastructure can alter surface water quantity and disrupt the delicate natural flows of local ecosystems. In strict alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SIU has implemented advanced, sustainable water extraction technologies across our associated university grounds, both on and off campus. Fully operational by 2024, these technologies ensure that our water extraction processes are designed and applied sustainably to meet the needs of each specific community and location.
Smart Groundwater and Aquifer Extraction
Because SIU operates a global network of campuses spanning from the United Arab Emirates and Kyrgyzstan to Switzerland and Latvia, we interact with a diverse range of natural water sources. In regions where our campuses or off-campus agricultural research plots rely on groundwater aquifers for temporary irrigation or facility supply, we employ highly regulated extraction technologies.
Rather than utilizing traditional, high-impact mechanical pumps, SIU infrastructure relies on Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) pumping systems. These intelligent pumps extract water at a carefully modulated, low-velocity rate that matches the natural recharge speed of the aquifer. By preventing aggressive drawdown, our sustainable extraction technology guarantees that the local water table is never depleted, protecting the long-term water security of the surrounding community.
Sustainable Surface Water Utilization
In our European locations, where university facilities may temporarily extract water from adjacent lakes or rivers for eco-friendly district cooling systems, SIU has mandated the installation of strict environmental safeguards.
To protect aquatic biodiversity, all surface water intake pipes are fitted with advanced, low-velocity micro-screens. This sustainable technology prevents fish, flora, and aquatic micro-organisms from being drawn into the campus infrastructure. Furthermore, to prevent thermal pollution, any extracted water used for cooling is passed through natural thermal-dissipation ponds before being gently returned to the source, ensuring that the natural temperature and chemical balance of the lake or river remain completely undisrupted.
Continuous Environmental Monitoring
The cornerstone of sustainable water extraction is continuous monitoring. SIU’s Campus Operations and Quality Assurance Board oversees an integrated network of digital flow meters and hydrological sensors at every extraction point across our global network. This real-time data ensures that our withdrawal volumes never exceed strict ecological limits and that natural waterways maintain their critical base flows.
