Annual Aquatic Ecosystems Education Programme in Partnership with Swiss International University

ISBM is proud to announce a new, ongoing partnership with Swiss International University (SIU) to deliver a comprehensive, annual educational outreach programme dedicated to protecting our vital water resources.

As part of our shared commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water), ISBM and Swiss International University are hosting a series of expert-led educational seminars and workshops. This initiative is designed specifically for local and national communities across Switzerland.

To ensure these vital topics are accessible to everyone, this annual programme is offered completely free of charge to all members of the public.

The programme is divided into three core educational modules, each addressing a critical area of aquatic stewardship:

Module 1: Fresh-Water Ecosystems & Conservation

Switzerland is home to some of Europe's most important lakes and rivers. This module offers educational programmes on fresh-water ecosystems, focusing on sustainable water irrigation practices and effective water management and conservation. Participants will learn practical, actionable strategies to protect local watersheds, ensure water quality, and manage fresh-water resources responsibly within their own communities.

Module 2: Sustainable Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Tourism

Our aquatic ecosystems are deeply connected to local economies and food systems. This outreach module educates local and national communities on the sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture, and tourism. Experts from Swiss International University will share best practices for maintaining healthy fish populations, developing eco-friendly aquaculture systems, and promoting sustainable water-based tourism that respects marine and lake environments without depleting them.

Module 3: Combating Overfishing and Destructive Practices

Protecting aquatic life requires understanding the threats it faces. This module provides educational outreach activities to raise awareness about overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and destructive fishing practices. Community members will learn how these practices devastate aquatic biodiversity and what consumer choices and local advocacy efforts can be utilized to combat these global and regional challenges.
