Enhancing Community Wellbeing: Celebrating Public Access to Green Spaces Across Our Global Campuses
Throughout 2025, Swiss International University (SIU) proudly advanced its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 11 by maintaining, expanding, and certifying free public access to our open and green spaces. By opening our recreational and natural areas to the public, we actively foster healthier lifestyles, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability within our host cities.
🌿 Bishkek Campus: Our main campus in Bishkek serves as a vital green lung and recreational hub for the city. Throughout 2025, we ensured that several open recreational areas remained freely accessible to the public. This includes a fully equipped football field and a tennis playground available for community use, alongside a well-maintained public garden that offers local residents a peaceful space for relaxation, outdoor study, and social gatherings. These spaces are intentionally designed to encourage active living, support youth engagement, and promote environmental care in an urban setting.
🌞 Dubai Campus: We recognize that sustainable urban planning must adapt to local geography. Due to the region’s extreme climate conditions, outdoor green spaces are naturally limited. However, our facilities in Dubai focused heavily on superior indoor environmental quality and community-based cultural spaces in 2025. Furthermore, we actively encouraged and facilitated partnerships with local public parks and indoor recreational programs to ensure our students and local community members had access to safe, climate-appropriate active spaces.
🌄 Switzerland: Switzerland is renowned for its naturally abundant green landscapes. Our Swiss campuses are deliberately integrated into areas surrounded by mountains, lakes, and forests. Throughout 2025, our students, visiting academics, and local residents enjoyed direct, unrestricted access to public walking trails, parks, and open countryside directly from our facilities. These settings reflect our institutional mission to integrate higher learning with sustainable, respectful interaction with nature.
Community Impact Event: The 2025 GQA Sustainable Green Space Certification
To ensure these public areas operate at the highest global standards, SIU partnered with the GQA Independent Global Quality Assurance Label Switzerland in 2025.
Through this collaboration, GQA audited and certified SIU’s public green spaces—particularly the Bishkek public gardens and sports facilities—under their "Historic Global Education Initiatives" framework. This 2025 certification guarantees that our community spaces meet rigorous international benchmarks for ecological maintenance, zero-waste landscaping, and public safety. To celebrate this milestone, SIU hosted an open-air "Community Health & Ecology Day," inviting local families to our newly certified Bishkek gardens for guided eco-tours and outdoor wellness seminars.
By ensuring public access where possible and rigorously maintaining the quality of our open areas, SIU continues to foster inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable environments that benefit both our academic community and the wider public.
