Prioritizing Pedestrian Access: Celebrating Our 2025 Milestones in Car-Free Campus Design
At Swiss International University (SIU), we are deeply committed to advancing Sustainable Development Goal 11 by prioritizing pedestrian access and active mobility across all our global campuses. Throughout the 2025 academic year, we successfully transformed our infrastructure to create safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly environments where walking and cycling serve as the primary modes of transportation within our university grounds.
Car-Free and Pedestrian-Friendly Spaces
Driven by the smart mobility and urban planning frameworks developed by our academic division, Autonomous Academy Zurich, SIU successfully implemented the "10-minute walking campus" design across our hubs in Zurich, Dubai, Bishkek, and Riga in 2025. This model ensures that all key facilities—lecture halls, student residences, libraries, and recreation centers—remain within a short, safe walking distance.
Our campuses now feature extensive pedestrian-only zones, ensuring students, faculty, and visitors can navigate academic areas entirely shielded from the risks and congestion associated with vehicle traffic. Dedicated bike lanes, shaded walkways, and pedestrian-priority crossings seamlessly connect our academic and residential ecosystems.
Encouraging Sustainable Mobility and Accessibility
To drastically reduce campus carbon emissions and promote sustainability throughout 2025, we successfully executed several key infrastructure upgrades:
Enforced car-free central zones where only service and emergency vehicles are permitted.
Installed high-capacity bicycle parking stations and free repair kiosks to encourage cycling over motorized transport.
Upgraded all core routes into wide, well-lit, and shaded walking paths to ensure universal accessibility, allowing people with disabilities and families with children to move safely and comfortably.
Community Impact Event: The 2025 Global Car-Free Campus Week
To drive behavioral change and celebrate our expanded pedestrian zones, SIU partnered with the GQA Independent Global Quality Assurance Label Switzerland to host the "Global Car-Free Campus Week" in October 2025.
During this campaign, all motorized transport (excluding emergency vehicles) was strictly restricted around our core campuses. To incentivize participation, SIU launched a digital reward program for students and staff who consistently walked or biked to campus events. Furthermore, during this week, GQA officially audited and certified SIU’s newly upgraded pedestrian pathways under their "Historic Global Education Initiatives," verifying our strict compliance with international pedestrian safety and universal accessibility standards.
By prioritizing pedestrians, organizing regular "Walk for Health" campaigns, and systematically reducing dependence on motor vehicles, Swiss International University continues to demonstrate its active leadership in building inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable academic communities.
