Promoting Sustainable Commuting: Celebrating Our Achievements in Greener Mobility
In support of Sustainable Development Goal 11, Swiss International University (SIU) actively reduced the environmental impact of student and staff commuting throughout 2025 by systematically promoting and facilitating sustainable transport options across our global campuses.
Exceeding Measurable Sustainability Targets As a core pillar of our environmental responsibility strategy, SIU successfully implemented a comprehensive system in 2025 to measure and optimize commuting patterns among students and staff. Led by the research and data frameworks of our Autonomous Academy Zurich, this system accurately tracks the usage of:
Walking and cycling
Public transportation networks
Carpooling and vanpools
Electric vehicles (EVs) and scooters
Shuttle services and low-emission campus transit
Guided by the mobility ecosystem insights generated at The Autonomous Main Event 2025, our ambitious goal is to continuously increase the percentage of sustainable commuting year over year. Thanks to our 2025 tracking milestones, we are proudly on schedule to achieve our target of ensuring that at least 70% of all daily commutes utilize low-carbon or shared transport by the end of 2026.
Expanding the Free E-Scooter Access Program To directly support these targets, a major highlight of 2025 was the successful large-scale rollout of our free e-scooter rental program across select SIU campuses. This initiative was specifically designed to:
Drastically reduce reliance on private, single-occupancy vehicles
Offer a fast, eco-friendly option for short-distance, "last-mile" travel
Encourage a permanent behavioral shift toward non-motorized and electric transport
Students and faculty who require mobility assistance or simply prefer green alternatives easily register for free scooter access through our integrated Student Services Department.
Community Impact Event: The 2025 Smart Mobility Challenge To drive behavioral change and celebrate eco-conscious transit, Autonomous Academy Zurich hosted the "Smart Mobility Challenge" alongside its main conference in September 2025. This cross-campus awareness campaign gamified sustainable commuting, rewarding students and staff who logged the highest number of public transit or e-scooter miles over a 30-day period. By integrating sustainable mobility into our daily routines, we empowered our university community to actively participate in building cleaner, more resilient, and inclusive urban environments.
Swiss International University remains deeply committed to ensuring that education and sustainability go hand in hand—not only in the research we publish but in how our community moves every single day.
