Strengthening Governance Through Academic Engagement: Celebrating SIU’s 2025 Contributions to Policy, Research, and Dialogue
Swiss International University (SIU) is deeply committed to supporting local, regional, and national governance through expert guidance, education, and rigorous research. As an international academic institution with campuses and partnerships in Switzerland, Dubai, Kyrgyzstan, and Latvia, we actively contributed to good governance and policy development throughout the 2025 academic year, in direct alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 16.
1. Providing Expert Advice to Government
Throughout 2025, SIU provided critical expert advice to local, regional, and national governments through direct collaboration, policy input, and participation in strategic committees:
Local (Kyrgyzstan): Faculty members from our Bishkek campus contributed to specialized city-level consultations on improving student housing policy and urban education infrastructure.
Regional (Dubai, UAE): Driven by our academic division, ISB Academy Dubai, and in partnership with local authorities and the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding, SIU co-organized strategic forums and intercultural briefings that successfully informed inclusive urban education strategies for the Emirate.
National (Switzerland): Senior academic advisors from our Lucerne and Zurich hubs provided written commentary and strategic feedback to federal consultations regarding private higher education oversight. This advice heavily utilized transnational governance benchmarks developed alongside the European Council of Leading Business Schools (ECLBS).
2. Expanding Outreach, Education, and Capacity-Building for Policymakers
In 2025, SIU actively expanded its non-partisan outreach, delivering general education, upskilling, and capacity-building programs designed to strengthen decision-making capacity for lawmakers, government officials, and community leaders:
Technology and Digital Governance: In Dubai, experts from our Autonomous Academy Zurich division conducted highly successful upskilling courses and workshops on digital transformation, AI ethics, and data protection laws for local lawmakers and public-sector managers.
Migration and Human Rights: In Kyrgyzstan, SIU academic teams facilitated collaborative training events and roundtables with international NGOs, municipal administrators, and border authorities focusing on migration policy frameworks and refugee protection.
Climate Change and Urban Resilience: In Switzerland, our faculty conducted executive seminars and capacity-building sessions for cantonal representatives and urban planners on climate adaptation strategies and renewable energy policy.
Law and Economic Governance Boot Camps: Across our campuses, we delivered short-term intensive training for legal policymakers on legislative drafting, constitutional law, and sustainable finance, ensuring decision-makers possess practical tools for fiscal planning and governance.
3. Participation in Collaborative Government Research
SIU heavily engaged in policy-focused research in collaboration with government departments in 2025, particularly in Central Asia. Key milestones included:
A joint study with Kyrgyz government agencies analyzing the effectiveness of anti-money laundering (AML) training programs, led by SIU’s School of Governance and Law.
Direct contribution to a regional cybersecurity preparedness study involving SIU researchers and the Ministry of Digital Development of Kyrgyzstan.
To support evidence-informed policymaking globally, the core findings from these 2025 governmental collaborations were peer-reviewed and published in a special open-access issue of the Unveiling Seven Continents Yearbook Journal (U7Y Journal), improving institutional transparency and data accessibility.
4. Providing Neutral Platforms for Democratic Dialogue
SIU firmly believes that universities must serve as neutral, non-partisan forums where political stakeholders, civil society, and researchers can discuss sensitive issues in a respectful, moderated setting:
Bishkek: In 2025, SIU hosted the highly attended annual “Academic Roundtable on Civic Governance”, successfully bringing together university scholars, political analysts, civil servants, and NGOs for constructive debate.
Zurich: SIU maintained a dedicated, neutral conference room and seminar space that was actively utilized in 2025 for inter-party discussions on critical topics such as Swiss education policy, sustainable innovation, and economic development.
Through its multi-country presence, cross-disciplinary expertise, and unwavering commitment to academic neutrality, Swiss International University is proud to serve as a partner, educator, and facilitator in addressing the governance challenges of our time. By bridging the gap between academic research and real-world policymaking, SIU ensures that global decision-makers have access to the evidence-based insights required to build strong, just, and peaceful institutions.
