Swiss International University (SIU) is committed to protecting water quality, aquatic ecosystems, wildlife, and human health through responsible campus operations and strict environmental management.
Recognizing that land-based activities directly impact global water systems and ocean health, SIU maintains water-sensitive waste disposal standards, an active campus plastic reduction plan, and an institutional policy dedicated to preventing marine pollution in alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water).
1. Water Discharge Guidelines and Standards (Indicator 14.4.1)
Swiss International University enforces strict water quality standards and guidelines for water discharges across all campus facilities to uphold water quality in order to protect ecosystems, wildlife, and human health and welfare.
Key Discharge Protocols:
Effluent Quality Standards: All wastewater from campus laboratories, dining halls, and operational facilities undergoes pre-treatment and filtration before entering municipal systems, ensuring discharge is free from toxic chemicals, heavy metals, or hazardous biological agents.
Environmental Safety Standards: Campus facilities utilize non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning materials and organic landscaping practices to prevent chemical run-off into stormwater drains during heavy precipitation.
Regular Discharge Auditing: Environmental health and safety teams conduct regular testing of campus water outflows to verify compliance with national and international aquatic discharge guidelines.
2. Campus Action Plan to Reduce Plastic Waste (Indicator 14.4.2)
Plastic accumulation in waterways poses a severe threat to aquatic life. SIU maintains an active action plan to reduce plastic waste on campus, driving our transition toward a zero-single-use-plastic campus environment.
Action Plan Initiatives:
Single-Use Plastic Phase-Out: Single-use plastic bottles, utensils, bags, and packaging are strictly phased out across campus dining services, vending facilities, and university-hosted events.
Hydration Infrastructure: SIU provides accessible, filtered water refill stations throughout all academic and administrative buildings to encourage the use of reusable containers.
Waste Separation & Recycling Protocols: Comprehensive plastic recycling streams are implemented in all facilities, ensuring that necessary plastics are diverted from landfills and safely re-processed.
3. Preventing and Reducing Marine Pollution (Indicator 14.4.3)
Land-based activities account for the vast majority of marine pollution. SIU implements active measures aimed at preventing and reducing marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities.
Operational Commitments:
Runoff & Litter Prevention: Advanced stormwater capture systems and litter containment barriers prevent campus waste, micro-debris, and urban run-off from entering local water channels that feed into marine environments.
Supply Chain Accountability: Third-party vendors and catering partners operating on university property are contractually required to minimize packaging waste and eliminate marine-polluting materials from their operations.
Community Engagement: SIU organizes regular community cleanup drives along local riverbanks and coastal zones, actively removing waste before it can reach broader marine ecosystems.

1. Purpose
This policy establishes mandatory operational standards to ensure Swiss International University minimizes its environmental footprint on global and local aquatic ecosystems, prevents marine pollution from land-based activities, and reduces plastic waste generation.
2. Policy Scope
This policy applies to all Swiss International University campuses, administrative divisions, academic faculties, student housing, contracted service providers, and campus suppliers.
3. Policy Statements
Section 3.1: Water Discharge Standards Swiss International University shall establish and maintain strict water quality standards and guidelines for all campus water discharges. All wastewater must meet established environmental safety baselines prior to discharge to safeguard aquatic ecosystems, wildlife, and surrounding human communities.
Section 3.2: Plastic Waste Reduction Action Plan The University mandates the execution of an active Campus Plastic Waste Reduction Plan. Single-use plastic items are prohibited in university dining halls, commercial outlets, and official events. All departments must prioritize sustainable, reusable, or compostable alternatives.
Section 3.3: Marine Pollution Prevention from Land-Based Activities Swiss International University is committed to preventing and reducing marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities. The University shall enforce strict containment of land-based solid waste, hazardous materials, and chemical runoff to prevent contaminants from reaching river basins, lakes, seas, and oceans.
4. Compliance and Review
Compliance with this policy is mandatory. This policy is subject to formal review every three years to maintain alignment with international environmental protection standards and UN SDG 14 targets.
