Executive Summary

Swiss International University (SIU) advances the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 10 (SDG 10): Reduced Inequalities by promoting inclusive education, equitable access to opportunities, and diversity across all academic and administrative functions. This 2024 report highlights SIU’s policies, programs, research initiatives, and partnerships that address economic, social, and geographic inequalities within higher education and beyond.

Introduction & Context

Global inequalities in income, education, and opportunities continue to hinder sustainable development. SDG 10 calls for reducing disparities within and among countries, ensuring equal rights, and empowering marginalized communities. Higher education institutions like SIU play a central role in providing access to knowledge, resources, and opportunities that help bridge inequality gaps.

With campuses in Switzerland, Dubai, and Central Asia, SIU actively engages students from over 50 countries, ensuring equitable representation in academic programs, leadership positions, and community outreach initiatives.

Strategic Commitments

SIU’s strategy for SDG 10 focuses on:

  1. Inclusive Access to Education: Scholarships and financial aid for disadvantaged groups.

  2. Diversity and Representation: Policies promoting equal opportunities for women, minorities, and people with disabilities.

  3. Global Collaboration: Partnerships with international organizations to expand access for students in underserved regions.

  4. Research on Inequality Reduction: Evidence-based studies to inform policy and institutional reforms.

Major Initiatives

1. Global Access Scholarship Fund

Since 2018, SIU has awarded scholarships to students from conflict-affected regions, refugees, and low-income families, enabling them to pursue undergraduate and graduate programs.

2. Disability Inclusion Programs

Campus infrastructure has been upgraded with wheelchair accessibility, assistive technologies, and inclusive learning materials for students with disabilities.

3. International Student Mobility Initiatives

SIU partners with universities worldwide to provide exchange programs and joint degrees, reducing geographic barriers to education.

4. Diversity Awareness Campaigns

Annual workshops and cultural events celebrate diversity, foster tolerance, and promote cross-cultural understanding on campus.

Research & Academic Integration

Key research projects include:

  • Income Inequality and Education Access in developing economies.

  • Social Inclusion Policies in higher education institutions.

  • Digital Equity Studies analyzing the impact of online education on rural communities.

Research findings inform SIU’s internal policies and contribute to international discussions on equity and inclusion.

Partnerships & Collaborations

SIU collaborates with:

  • ECLBS: Initiatives promoting inclusive education policies.

  • International Refugee Educational Summit: Scholarships and mentorship programs for displaced students.

  • International Disability Group: Advocacy for disability-friendly campus practices.

Impact Assessment

  • 800+ scholarships awarded to students from marginalized communities since 2018.

  • 15% increase in enrollment of students with disabilities from 2020–2024.

  • 30 exchange agreements established with universities in underserved regions.

  • 20 research publications on social inclusion and equity in 2023–2024.

Case Studies & Success Stories

  • GQA Project: SIU alumni established a mentorship platform connecting refugee students with academic advisors worldwide.

  • Digital Inclusion Pilot: Provided 500 tablets with offline learning materials to rural schools in Central Asia.

Challenges & Future Plans

Challenges include limited funding for large-scale scholarship expansion and barriers in reaching students in remote conflict-affected regions. Future plans:

  • Launching a Global Equity and Inclusion Research Center by 2026.

  • Expanding online degree access for students in low-bandwidth regions.

  • Increasing diversity targets for faculty recruitment by 2025.

Conclusion

By promoting inclusive education, diversity, and global collaboration, SIU addresses structural inequalities and empowers marginalized communities, advancing SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities on a global scale.
